What day of the year is it? Find today's month in the chart below, then add today's date to that month's starting number. As of this writing, Wednesday, October 14, 2026 is day 287 of 365, with 78 days left in the year.

That number is called the day of the year, or the ordinal date. It runs from 1 on January 1 to 365 on December 31, or to 366 in a leap year. Below you'll find a quick lookup table, a full printable day-number chart, the leap-year rule in plain words, how week numbers fit in, and simple ways to get the number on your phone or in a spreadsheet without counting on your fingers.

Today's day number, the fast way

Take the number of days before your month starts, then add today's date. That's your day of the year.

Here's the lookup table. "Days before" is how many days have already passed before the 1st of that month.

Month Days before (common year) Day number of the 1st Days before (leap year) Day number of the 1st (leap)
January 0 1 0 1
February 31 32 31 32
March 59 60 60 61
April 90 91 91 92
May 120 121 121 122
June 151 152 152 153
July 181 182 182 183
August 212 213 213 214
September 243 244 244 245
October 273 274 274 275
November 304 305 305 306
December 334 335 335 336

If you only need a quick answer to "what day of the year is it," this table plus one addition gets you there in seconds.

Worked example: October 14 in a common year. October's "days before" is 273. Add 14 and you get 287. So October 14 is day 287.

Days left in the year: subtract the day number from 365 (or 366 in a leap year). For October 14, 2026, that's 365 minus 287, which leaves 78 days. If you'd rather watch that number tick down live, our New Year countdown shows the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until January 1.

What day of the year is it in a leap year?

In a leap year, every date from March 1 on is one day number higher, because February gets a 29th day.

The leap-year rule has three parts:

  1. A year divisible by 4 is a leap year. That's why 2028 is one.
  2. Except years divisible by 100, which are not leap years. 1900 was not a leap year.
  3. Except years divisible by 400, which are leap years after all. 2000 was a leap year.

So in a leap year:

  • January 1 through February 28 have the same day numbers as usual (1 to 59).
  • February 29 is day 60.
  • March 1 becomes day 61 instead of 60, and everything after it shifts up by one.
  • December 31 is day 366.

If you're tracking the leap day itself, it only comes once every four years in most cases, which makes it a fun thing to count down to.

Milestone days worth knowing

A few day numbers come up again and again, especially for schools, offices, and anyone tracking yearly goals.

Day number Common year date Leap year date Why people notice it
1 January 1 January 1 First day, fresh start on goals
100 April 10 April 9 A popular check-in point for yearly goals
183 July 2 July 1 Halfway point of a common year
200 July 19 July 18 Two hundred days down
256 September 13 September 12 A favorite number among programmers
300 October 27 October 26 The final stretch begins
365 December 31 December 30 Last day of a common year
366 (none) December 31 Last day of a leap year

The halfway point deserves a quick note. In a common year, July 2 is day 183, which leaves 182 days before it and 182 days after it. That makes noon on July 2 the true middle of the year.

Day of the year vs. week number

The day number counts single days from January 1. The week number counts weeks, and it follows its own rules.

Many offices, schools, and planners use week numbers alongside day numbers, so it helps to know how they relate. The most common week-numbering system, the ISO standard, works like this:

  • Weeks start on Monday.
  • Week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday.
  • Most years have 52 weeks. Some have 53.

That second rule means week 1 can start in late December, and the last week can spill into early January. 2026 is a 53-week year under this system, and January 1, 2027 actually falls in week 53 of 2026. October 14, 2026 sits in week 42.

A rough way to estimate the week from the day number: divide the day number by 7 and round up. Day 287 divided by 7 is 41, and rounding up gives week 41 or 42 depending on how the year started. For an exact answer, use a calendar app or a spreadsheet's week-number function.

Where you'll see day numbers in real life

Day-of-year numbers show up in more places than most people realize.

  • Shipping and warehouse labels. Many products carry a date code with a two-digit year followed by a three-digit day number. A code like 26287 means day 287 of 2026, which is October 14. People often call this a "Julian date," even though that term technically means something a little different in astronomy.
  • Food and manufacturing lot codes. Packing dates are often stamped in the same day-number style.
  • Science and weather data. Logs and data sets often record the day number because it sorts neatly and avoids month-length confusion.
  • Fitness and habit challenges. "Day 100 of my reading streak" works best when you track by day number.
  • School calendars. Classrooms count school days separately, but plenty of teachers like to show the calendar day number too, especially around the 100th day.

If you're tracking a streak or a personal milestone, the number you want is usually days since a start date, not the calendar day number. That's what our days since counter is for. It counts up from any date you choose.

How to get the day number on your phone or computer

You don't have to count by hand. Here are a few quick ways to get it.

  • Spreadsheet formula. In Excel or Google Sheets, type =TODAY()-DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),1,0) and format the cell as a number. It returns today's day of the year and updates every day.
  • For any date in a spreadsheet. Put the date in A1 and use =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0).
  • Calendar apps. Some calendar apps can show week numbers in their settings. Turning that on is a handy shortcut for weekly planning.
  • Mental math. Memorize a few anchors: April 1 is day 91, July 1 is day 182, October 1 is day 274 (all common-year numbers). From there, just add the date and subtract 1.

That last trick works because the 1st of each month already counts as one day. So October 14 is 274 plus 14 minus 1, which is 287.

Using the day number to count down

The day number turns any yearly goal into a simple countdown: days left equals 365 minus today's number.

Once you know what day of the year it is, a few handy calculations open up:

  • Days left this year: 365 minus today's number (366 in a leap year).
  • Percent of the year done: today's number divided by 365. Day 287 is about 79 percent of the way through.
  • Days between two dates in the same year: subtract the smaller day number from the larger one. Day 359 (Christmas) minus day 287 is 72 days.

If you like crossing days off, a countdown calendar gives you a visual version of the same wait. For other ways to track time, from paper chains to apps, see our list of ways to count down days. And if there's one date you care about most this year, set up a live timer for it with the countdown creator and let it do the math for you.

Day numbers for popular holidays

Fixed-date holidays always land on the same day number in a common year, which makes them easy countdown targets.

Holiday Date Day number (common year) Day number (leap year)
New Year's Day January 1 1 1
Valentine's Day February 14 45 45
St. Patrick's Day March 17 76 77
Independence Day July 4 185 186
Halloween October 31 304 305
Christmas December 25 359 360
New Year's Eve December 31 365 366

To see how far away one of these is, subtract today's day number from the holiday's number. If the answer is negative, the holiday has already passed this year, so add 365 to get the count until next year's date.

Holidays that follow a weekday rule, like Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, land on a different day number every year. For those, it's simpler to use a live timer such as our Christmas countdown for the big one, or to set up your own.

So the next time someone at work asks, "What day of the year is it?" you'll have more than a number. You'll know how many days remain until the next holiday, how far into the year you are, and which week you're in.

Mistakes to avoid

Most day-number mix-ups come from leap years, off-by-one counting, or confusing two different systems.

  • Forgetting the leap day. In a leap year, every date from March 1 on is one higher. Double-check the year before you trust a chart.
  • Off by one when counting days between dates. Day 300 minus day 290 is 10 days apart, but if you count both days inclusively, that's 11 days. Decide which you need before you tell someone the answer.
  • Mixing up day number and week number. Day 42 is in mid-February. Week 42 is in mid-October. They're very different.
  • Treating a date code as a date. A label that reads 26287 isn't the 26th of anything. Split it into year (26) and day (287) first.
  • Assuming every year has 52 weeks. Some years have 53 under the ISO system, which can shift a whole year of weekly reports by one.
